| Dry itchy skin |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|05:19 pm] |
|
I drink a lot of water, exfoliate with sugar scrubs and shower fuzzies, restrict myself to Dove, take prenatal vits & omega 3, apply baby oil while my skin is damp and cocoa butter based creams at other times and yet I still seem to have dry itchy patches, especially on my legs and stomach. I realize that gaining ten pounds over the last five months had caused some stretching in the tummy but I'm at my wit's end about how to end the itching. I'd appreciate any suggestions if I'm missing something obvious. TIA. |

| Meal Plans |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|04:04 pm] |
I do better at eating at home when I don't have to plan myself. I have signed up for "Saving Dinner" and I like the meal plans but the interface is a total PITA for me (I use a linux web book and it hates the PDF format) so I am looking for other options. This looks sort of like what I am looking for http://www.cookforgood.com/current_menu_month.html but the error in the spread sheet and limited choices are sort of a turn off. Meat is ok, nutirtional info is a big plus and an interface with our smart phones for grocery shopping would be to die for. |

| computer recipe programs |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|11:34 am] |
Anyone have suggestions for good recipe storage programs? I just got my OWN laptop, no more sharing with my hubby, so I want to store all my recipes on it rather than digging through a messy recipe box of cards, printed recipes, handwritten notes, clipped magazines, etc. I want to find a program where I can enter them all in that is also easy to find them after the fact. Doesn't have to be free, but at least cheap would be good.
We have a lot of allergy issues in our house, so able to categorize them based on ingredients would be helpful as well, but not necessary. Thanks! |

A very dear friend of mine is having some health issues, and a bunch of her friends have clubbed together to help her out by making dinners for her and her husband.
For my upcoming turn, I've got a main dish. And I've got a veggie side. But I'll be danged if I can think of a good starch side to cook (and this is the key) that tastes good when prepared several hours in advance and reheated. All my potato recipes rely on quick serving to be maximally tasty, most pasta salads are too summery for this time of year, and bread just seems... uninspired. Though I may feel that way because I'm a mediocre baker.
But I am a pretty good cook. So help me, h_d, give me your best reheatable carboydrate-y dishes... you're my only hope.
Edit: WOW! You guys rock. Now my only problem is I have too many good choices:) I'm leaning towards the pilaf, as the main dish I'm planning is pretty rich on its own. Thank you so much! |

| Substitute for Velveeta in Tasha Tudor's Mac and Cheese? |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|07:33 pm] |
Last week I made homemade macaroni and cheese using Tasha Tudor's recipe. We really loved the mac and cheese, but it uses Velveeta for half of the cheese in the recipe (the other half is grated cheddar). I've been becoming more and more opposed to using processed foods, and after watching "Food Inc." last night, I'm really hoping to find a substitution for the Velveeta in the recipe.
Any suggestions? |

| Recipe search website |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|07:02 pm] |
I swear I'm not affiliated with this website, but I think it's one of the best ideas I've come across online! It's call Eat Your Books, and it's a member site ($25 a year or $50 lifetime, so yeah, it is kind of steep) which has cookbooks indexed. They don't have the recipes: they just have a database of cookbooks and main ingredients so you can search by ingredient, course, dish type, etc. But really that's all I need: I already have the recipes at my disposal, I just don't have an easy way to find them.
I read about it in a Boston.com article the other day, and joined for the free 30 day trial, and I've already used it a few times in the past few days. (For example, we totally forgot to cook the bacon we had bought for Christmas breakfast, so I typed in bacon and got a whole list of recipes that I have... made a really yummy bacon, apple, and cheddar pie from an English cookbooks I have). I'm finding the search function really simple to use.
It's still a very new site, and they only have so much indexed. Plus, they're only using one store's cookbook database, so many of my cookbooks aren't even in their database... I emailed the woman who put it together and she said they're fixing that soon. That dais, I do have a ton of really old and obscure cookbooks that I got from my mother, so it's not totally surprising considering how many are long out of print. I didn't have any problems finding any of the cookbooks I have that had been published in the past 10 years or so. If you're looking for work at home options, they do seem to be paying people for data entry :)
So, yeah, this is just a plug. Really I think it's the best idea: I have so many cookbooks (upwards of 300, apparently) and sometimes I spend so long scanning the indexes for a recipe that I have to quickly microwave something from the freezer because I run out of time to cook. I have Mac Gourmet, where I index recipes that I find online and type in recipes from magazines, but there's no way I'd ever be able to enter in even a fraction of all the cookbooks I have.
Basically, I want to encourage membership because the more money they get, the more cookbooks they can index. (And I've already indexed a few that are fairly obscure but that I love, as a volunteer effort). |

Good afternoon, concertfucks.
Has anyone here seen or heard of Goober and the Peas? I just saw their first concert in Detroit as of a 15 year hiatus. I recommend the show for anyone who isn't allergic to hay.
or,
ITP, tell me about your favorite concert ever. |

[Dec. 27th, 2009|10:38 am] |
1. Does anyone know of any methods for polishing patent leather? I have a pair of awesome shoes that have a few scuffs and I'd like to shine 'em up and keep them in tip top shape.
2. Suggestions for getting highlighter pen out of clothing? Polyester skirt meets hot pink highlighter = no good. :( |

| Organization computer program |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|07:40 pm] |
I'd really like to start becoming more organized/scheduled with my household chores and my son's activities (naps, etc.). I think the easiest way for me to do this would be with a computer program, but I can't seem to find one that fits my needs. Ideally, it would
- Be a small window that sits on my desktop all the time - I would be able to assign things to complete daily, weekly (every Monday or whatever), and monthly. - If possible, set a time of day to complete the tasks - Be free. :)
Does anyone have any suggestions? |

| Target Furniture |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|06:52 pm] |
Does anyone have any experience with furniture from Target? Is it good, is it bad, is it awful? I've been looking at their bar/buffet thingy, but apparently it's an online only-item, so I can't really see and touch it before buying (or deciding not to). Thank you in advance. |

| Passing the idea along |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|06:44 pm] |
I found an article on the internet a while back about litterbox liners for cats who like to shred.
Backstory: My cat is a liner shredder. I usually had to completely change out the litter and liner twice a week because he just ripped holes through it. I started double-lining my boxes, but that hardly did anything to stop it.
I read the aforementioned that said that they switched out liners for trash compactor bags. It's a thicker plastic and is less likely to shred under cat claws.
And it works like MAGIC, I kid you not! I've only found two small puncture holes near the very top of the liner.
So yes. Trash compactor bags instead of catbox liners! Give it a try! |

| canned tomatoes, BPA, other tomatoes? |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|08:07 pm] |
My sister just decided to stop buying canned tomatoes because BPA might be in them and it might be bad for you. She made Christmas dinner for us using Pomi strained and chopped tomatoes and was disappointed in the sharp taste of them (as I always have been). I've seen Happy Girl tomatoes recommended online, but I'm not local to San Francisco and at $7 a jar plus shipping, it's probably not an option for me.
Are you avoiding canned tomatoes? If so, what are you using instead? |
